Choosing outfits for your engagement session doesn’t need to be stressful, in fact, it can be fun. The best advice? Wear something that feels like you. These photos are all about capturing your connection, your vibe, and your story together.
The right outfits are the ones that let you feel comfortable and be yourselves.
Comfort is a must. If you’re constantly adjusting or tugging at something, it’s going to be hard to settle into the moment. Pick clothes that fit well and allow you to move freely, whether that’s walking, hugging, or sitting close together. When you’re comfortable, your photos will feel more natural and genuine.
Instead of trying to match perfectly, think about coordinating. Stick to colours and tones that work well together, things like neutrals, earth tones, or muted shades tend to photograph beautifully.
Try to avoid bold patterns, logos, or anything too loud, since that can distract from the emotion and connection in your photos.
Pro tip: if you can’t sit, walk, or hug in it… might be better to try something a little different. Engagement photos aren’t a red carpet event (unless you really want them to be, in which case I'm so down!)
Many couples may like to bring two outfits to their session, one casual and one a little more dressed up. This can add variety and let you show different sides of your style, especially if we’re moving between locations.
Speaking of locations, keep that in mind when choosing your looks. If the setting is more urban or modern, something slightly polished can feel right. If we’re shooting in nature, soft fabrics and neutral tones tend to blend in really nicely with the surroundings.
Layers are great too, specially during the early mornings of a spring or autumn session. They add a bit of texture and give you something to interact with during the shoot for example a jacket, sweater, or a trendy sun hat. Clothes that move with the wind can also bring a lot of life and softness to the photos, like a flowy dress or a shirt with a little drape to it.
At the end of the day, don’t overthink it. This session is about the two of you and your personalities. Wear something you feel confident and at ease in, something you’d actually wear on a nice date together. That’s what makes the photos feel honest and full of joy.
